Hop into joy and prepare before adopting a rabbit this Easter

Clay Humane Reminds People to Prepare Before Adopting a Rabbit this Easter

As Easter approaches, many children beg their parents for pet rabbits in advance of the holiday. While bunnies are a familiar symbol of Easter, Clay Humane, a nonprofit veterinary clinic in Orange Park, is ensuring potential rabbit owners are prepared for their new furry friend.

“Many rabbits are abandoned and end up in shelters after Easter,” said Dr. Christian Broadhurst, senior staff veterinarian at Clay Humane. “While bunnies are adorable, they are not low-maintenance pets and people often tire of them because of all the time and attention they require.”

Rabbits need daily exercise outside their cages, require daily litter box cleaning and eat a special diet of Timothy hay and well-washed dark leafy green vegetables every day. Bunnies do not typically enjoy being picked up and carried around and need regular trips to the veterinarian like other pets. Rabbits live to approximately 7 to 10 years of age.

“If your child is determined to get a pet bunny this Easter, try getting a stuffed bunny and teaching your child about rabbit care before committing to adopting a pet bunny,” said Broadhurst. “When you are ready to adopt a pet rabbit, visit a local animal shelter or rescue group.”
