Humane Education
Another effective way for the society to educate the children of the community is with our annual Poster Contest. The contest is held for the 5th grade students and is offered to elementary schools countywide. The theme of the contest is pet overpopulation problem. The students are asked to use their creativity and design a billboard illustrating to the public the importance of spaying and neutering our pets.

Society staff members give humane education presentations and handouts to participating schools to prepare them for the contest. Through these presentations alone, we reach approximately 800 students. Parents also receive the message of spaying and neutering because information is also sent home to them. There are prizes donated by local businesses which include: savings bonds from First Union, Adventure Landing passes, Skate Space passes, Aladdin Castle tokens, Clay Theater movie passes, Humane Society t-shirts, and every student in the contest receives McDonald’s coupons.

The poster of the first place overall winner is made into a billboard with their name and school displayed on Blanding Boulevard for a full month. What a way to get the message across!
