Dear Jake & Scout,
I have heard rumor that the Clay County Humane
Society is involved in a local anti-violence/anti-cruelty coalition. I am
interested in the Humane Society's role in this project and in how I can get
involved. What can you tell me?
Sincerely, A Concerned Citizen
Dear Concerned,
You heard right! The Clay County Humane Society is a
part of the First Coast First Strike Anti-violence/ Anti-cruelty Coalition. The
coalition is made up of both human and animal related members from Clay County,
Duval County, St. John's County, Putnam County and Baker County. Included are
area humane societies and animal control offices, local sheriff's officers,
representatives from the State Attorneys Offices, domestic violence shelters,
youth crisis centers, animal rescue organizations and valuable concerned
citizens. The group's mission is to raise awareness of the connection between
human violence and animal cruelty, to encourage legislation for tougher
penalties and to, eventually, create a program for the prevention of this
needless violence towards humans and animals. We are currently in the very early
stages of this program, using our time to format educational presentations,
networking with other area organizations, and spreading the word through print
and media articles. Dedicated members meet monthly to review current projects
and brainstorm ideas for future programs. If you would like further information,
please call Claire Hall at (904) 276-7729 ext. 212.
Sincerely, Jake
